I am Emma Butterworth, an experienced, classically trained cellist based in Bristol.
Alongside my professional cello work, I am a media composer and have a master’s degree in composition for film and TV.
My background is in classical music and I play in a number of orchestras and chamber groups, but for many years I have also performed and recorded with pop and folk groups, singer-songwriters and rock bands.
I first started playing aged 4, and learnt the cello via the Suzuki Method, a tradition that emphasises learning aurally rather than simply reading notes from the page. This means that whilst I’m more than happy to read a score, I also have many years of experience in improvisation and writing my own string lines.
